Over 100 European Marine Sites (EMS) have been designated in the UK under EU laws since 1994. Yet historically there has been no effective system in place to manage destructive fishing practices in these sites. This webinar will describe how the Marine Conservation Society (MCS, www.mcsuk.org) and ClientEarth (www.clientearth.org) have collaborated for seven years on a national campaign to protect EMS from destructive fishing, and how UK authorities and regulators have responded. That response includes several promising new initiatives to deliver improved protection for EMS, developed with fishing communities. Jean-Luc and Catherine suggest that the UK experience is adaptable to other EU member states that also face destructive fishing in their own EMS.

This webinar was presented by Jean-Luc Solandt (Senior Biodiversity Policy Officer, Marine Conservation Society) and Catherine Weller (Lawyer, ClientEarth). It was co-sponsored by the EBM Tools Network and MPA News.
